Christmas recycling in Bridgend County Borough

As Christmas approaches, Bridgend County Borough Council has confirmed what changes will be made to waste and recycling collections during the festive period.
There will be collections on Christmas Eve, but not on Christmas Day or Boxing Day - everything will be picked up two days later than usual for the rest of that week, including Sunday 29 December.
Waste and recycling will be collected on New Year’s Eve, but not on New Year’s Day. Collections will be one day later up until Saturday 4 January, with all collections returning to normal on Monday 6 January.
Households usually generate more waste over Christmas, and while most of this can be recycled – e.g. Christmas cards and cardboard packaging – some items, such as wrapping paper and bubble wrap, will need to be disposed of as waste.
To support this, each home across Bridgend County Borough will be able to put out one extra bin bag for their first refuse collection after Christmas Day.
Bridgend County Borough is currently the second best area in Wales for how it handles its waste, and I’d like to thank residents for their amazing efforts. We are relaxing the usual two-bag rule for the first collection after Christmas day to help households recycle as much of their Christmas waste as possible.
The main festive items which cannot be recycled are wrapping paper, black plastic, cellophane wrap, bubble wrap and polystyrene. Almost everything else can be recycled, including paper envelopes which go in your white sack, Christmas cards which go in your orange sack, foil which goes in your blue sack, and all of your peelings and other food waste, including the turkey carcass, which can go out with your brown food container.
You can even recycle real Christmas trees by taking them along to one of the local community recycling centres, and if you are having a clear out in the run-up to Christmas, don’t forget that unwanted items in good condition can always be donated to our re-use shop which is based at Maesteg Community Recycling Centre. The shop accepts anything that has re-use potential, and the funds raised are invested locally into important social initiatives.

More Christmas recycling reminders:
- all three community recycling centres in Bridgend County Borough will be closed on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.
- small electrical items, such as hairdryers, can be recycled from the kerbside.
- clothing can be recycled from the kerbside by putting items in a small plastic carrier bag and placing them next to your recycling containers on your collection day.
- chocolate Santa and chocolate coins foil can be recycled in your blue recycling bags.
- recycle your real Christmas trees at our Community Recycling Centres.
