Council seeking bids for Porthcawl foodstore development site

Bridgend County Borough Council is currently seeking bids from interested parties to purchase a two acre foodstore site in Porthcawl.

The site, known locally as The Green, forms part of the Salt Lake regeneration site which is earmarked for a residential, leisure, retail and commercial development as well as open space, car parking and active travel routes.

The deadline for all formal bids is 12 noon on December 2.

The council’s cabinet member for regeneration Charles Smith said: “There has been strong interest in the site to date and it is anticipated that multiple bids will be submitted for consideration.

“A key requirement for all bids is the need to demonstrate compliance with the planning development brief which outlines that this site is to provide a gateway building at the entrance to the town which is of high quality and a bespoke design.

“The development will unlock funds that will be reinvested into infrastructure improvements and further stages of the regeneration plans, including work to upgrade and improve the nearby Hillsboro Car Park, a housing development next to the new store, a leisure scheme, a hotel and further housing on the seafront.”

Planning conditions will ensure there are clear links and pedestrian access between the food store site and John Street.

The council’s cabinet members are due to make a final decision in early 2021 on which store will be developed on the site. It is being marketed by EJ Hales.
