Kick Start grant helps Bridgend-based salon thrive

A Bridgend-based hair salon is thriving after it launched ten months ago with the help of a Kick Start grant provided by Bridgend County Borough Council and Tata Steel subsidiary UK Steel Enterprise.

With the help of the Kick Start grant, Jollie’s Hair Lounge has built an excellent clientele, offering a full range of services including special packages for weddings and other special occasions.

The funding has not only helped the salon establish but has also helped to create jobs with salon owner, Jo Nyafuna, employing two qualified stylists to help deliver her services.

With over 30 years’ experience in the hair business, Jo said: “I really appreciate the support I have received from the council and UK Steel Enterprise, which helped with the set-up costs.

“We aim to create a good experience for our clients when they visit. People want to relax and have a break from the hustle and bustle of their everyday lives. There is plenty of parking here too, which is important to our visitors and helps them to feel relaxed when they arrive.

“I am very pleased with the way things have gone and the future for the business is looking bright.”

It’s great to see that business is booming for Jollie’s Hair Lounge and that jobs have also been created as a result of the Kick Start grant provided.

We are pleased to be working in partnership with UK Steel Enterprise for another year to support local businesses and help make business dreams become a reality in Bridgend County Borough.

Councillor Charles Smith, Cabinet Member for Education and Regeneration

Martin Palmer of UK Steel Enterprise said: “We are really pleased that we can continue to support the Kick Start grant in Bridgend for a further year and appreciate the work that the Economy Team put into making it a great success.

“We are delighted with the different types of businesses that have been set up ranging from hair and beauty businesses to accountants and chiropractors.”
