Proud Councils nominated for PinkNews award

Bridgend County Borough Council is delighted that the Proud Councils partnership, which aims to improve the support offered to LGBTQ+ staff within local authorities in Wales, has been shortlisted for a PinkNews award.

Proud Councils was formed in 2015 to ensure that local government across Wales is a visible leader in the field of LGBTQ+ rights and actively championing LGBTQ+ inclusion in our communities.

The partnership has been shortlisted for the Public Sector Equality award which celebrates those exceptional parts of the UK’s governmental or other public bodies that are making a change for the better.

The annual ceremony recognises the incredible contributions of the people, organisations and companies that campaign for LGBTQ+ people and equality worldwide.

Alongside Bridgend County Borough, Rhondda Cynon Taf, Merthyr Tydfil, Cardiff, Newport, Caerphilly, Torfaen, Blaenau Gwent, and Swansea all take active roles in the Proud Councils partnership.

Speaking as a proud member of the LGBTQ+ community myself, I’m over the moon that the Proud Councils partnership has been recognised for its ongoing work to increase LGBTQ+ inclusion.

As recent months have shown, the battle towards equality for our community continues – especially for people within the trans and non-binary communities. Our councils across South Wales working together shows the commitment we feel towards all parts of the LGBTQ+ community and promoting respect and diversity in our communities. It’s vital that Welsh public services deliver for everyone, regardless of race, sexuality, gender identity, age, disability or religion.

I wish Proud Councils all the best at the PinkNews Awards and thank staff across all of the participating the local authorities that have worked hard to ensure its success.

Councillor Rhys Goode, Cabinet Member for Future Generations and Wellbeing
