Storms prompt safety checks on local coal tips

Engineers from Bridgend County Borough Council are carrying out checks to ensure that former local coal mining sites remain safe in the wake of storms Ciara and Dennis.

With more heavy rain forecast over the next few days, the checks are being carried out as a precautionary measure at 41 sites located in the Ogmore, Garw and Llynfi valleys.

As the same time, the Coal Authority has confirmed that it is carrying out similar checks on any sites that they might have responsibility for across the region.

Bridgend County Borough has a rich industrial heritage, and with a number of former mining sites located across all three of our valleys, we want to be sure that they remain safe in the aftermath of recent storms and heavy rain.

We already carry out checks on former coal tips for things like surface drainage, fencing, signage, seating and safe access, and will be inspecting local watercourses and sites for any sign that there may be a danger of slippage.

Residents can be assured that if these checks highlight any issues which require attention, we will take urgent action to ensure that the sites continue to remain safe

Many former mining sites like this one in the Garw Valley have now been reclaimed and returned to nature.
