£2.25m investment into local roads

Roads, pavements and bridges in Bridgend County Borough are being resurfaced, repaired and improved as part of a £2.25m investment into the local highway network.

Using funding from Welsh Government and the council’s Capital Programme for 2020-21, the local authority is carrying out work on 44 local roads, eight footways and two bridges in communities all across the county borough.

Councillor Richard Young, Cabinet Member for Communities, said: “As work winds up this week on resurfacing Anglesey Way in Porthcawl, our £2.25m highway improvement programme has passed the half-way mark and is well underway.

“By March 2021, it will have provided a broad mix of fresh resurfacing and renewal work as well as associated repairs and drainage improvements for local communities all across the area.

“This represents a multi-million pound investment into the highways infrastructure of Bridgend County Borough, and in order to identify the areas where the work is taking place, the council’s highways inspectors have used a series of assessments, condition surveys and skid-resistance tests while also taking into account issues raised by the public and local councillors.”

Across the county borough, pavements are at various stages of renewal in areas such as Cefn Road in Cefn Cribbwr, Bethania Street in Maesteg, Ton Glas in Bryntirion, Pyle Inn Way, Laleston High Street, Protheroe Avenue in Penyfai, Adare Street in Ogmore Vale and Cae Odin at Brackla.

Asphalt resurfacing work has already been completed at Waun Goch, Arnant Villas and Gwendoline Street at Nantymoel, Llwyn Gwern in Pencoed, Bradfield Road in Cefn Glas, and Heol Adare, Heol Caeglas and Heol Yr Afon in Ynysawdre.

Road surfaces at Hendre Lane, Perry's Lane, Tyla Lane, New Road and Aberbaiden Road have also been renewed, and work is currently taking place to lay down new road markings.

Following delays caused by Covid-19, more than 60 per cent of work has been completed on strengthening the A4061 Frithwaun and Frithwin bridges. This is expected to be complete by March 2021, while work to replace the culvert located at the B4280 Penprysg Road in Pencoed is also underway.

Contracts are being prepared so that safety work can take place to net and retain land above the carriageway along the A473 in Tondu Road, and also to replace parapets on the A4061 at North Vale View in Nantymoel.

• Cefn Glas Road lane in Penyfai
• A4065 Tondu / Bryn Road, Brynmenyn
• A4063 Sarn Interchange
• A4064 New Road link with Abergarw
• Pant Street, Pantygog
• B4280 between the junction with Heol Spencer and the Masons Arms
• Bryn Rd in Coychurch
• Rogers Lane in Laleston
• Heol Dyfed in Garth, Maesteg
• Cwmdu Street in Garth, Maesteg
• Heol Tegfryn in Pyle
• Glynllan at Blackmill
• Danygraig Avenue at Newton in Porthcawl

A number of other roads have also been completed with work ongoing to replace road markings. These include:

• A473 Coychurch
• A4063 Tonna Road in Caerau
• A4063 Piction Street in Nantyfyllon
• Pontycymmer Square and Oxford Street
• B4283 Curwen Terrace to Porthcawl Road in North Cornelly

Roads that are due to be completed this month include:

• Anglesey Way in Porthcawl
• Blandy Terrace in Ogmore Vale
• B4282 Bridgend Road from Crown Road to Ewenny Road
• Glyn Street in Ogmore Vale
• Cae Wallis Street in Bridgend
• A4063 Bryn Terrace at Caerau

In November, the work will move on to the following roads:

• Bedford Road in Cefn Cribbwr
• Litchard Park in Pendre

One road scheme - Heol Bradford in Bettws ­– has been temporarily postponed while utility company works take place.

The council is making every effort to limit disruption while the highway improvement programme is underway.
