Activities during Safeguarding Week 2020

This year, Safeguarding Week will run from Monday 16 November until Friday 20 November and there are a range of free activities available for the public to raise awareness of safeguarding.

Alcohol Awareness and Mental Health – 10am until 12pm
This online workshop will cover alcohol and its effects, alcohol and dependency and how alcohol impacts on mental health.

Virtual Youth Club online bullying session – 5pm until 6pm
The Youth Engagement and Participation Service (YEPS) staff are running online bullying sessions during the virtual youth club on Zoom, 11 to 25 year olds from Rhondda Cynon Taf, Merthyr Tydfil and Bridgend areas are invited to participate for free.

Youth Engagement and Participation Service (YEPS) Instagram poll – live from 9am for 24 hours
YEPS Mental Health and Wellbeing officers will be running an Instagram poll to engage with 11 to 25 year olds from the Rhondda Cynon Taf, Merthyr Tydfil and Bridgend areas. After the poll, there will be an option to receive more information and support.

Roots of Strength creative project – 5pm until 6pm
The development of this creative project will see members of Bridgend Youth Council exploring the roots of communities, networks and support systems that they have to show the extent of support available for young people who may feel low and isolated.

Safeguarding - 11.40am
The Director of Cwm Taf Morgannwg Mind, Julian John, will be live on GTFM Radio speaking about safeguarding.
Workshop for those affected by self-harm – 2pm until 2.40pm
The Samaritans will be holding an online workshop via Microsoft Teams for those affected by self-harm. It will cover, why people do it, what you can do to help and where you can turn for assistance.

Online Mental Health and Wellbeing event
This online event will be held over two days will involve four virtual rooms:
- Mental Health education
- Wellbeing activities
- Personal stories
- Social activities

Healthy relationships workshop
During the evening Outreach sessions, the MVH Youth Team in partnership with South Wales Police will be delivering workshops to 11 to 25 year olds around healthy relationships, consent and control.

Supporting Wellbeing – 9.30am until 10.30am
This virtual session will be run via Microsoft Teams and aims to reflect on ways of supporting our own wellbeing and the wellbeing of those around us during this challenging time.

Substance misuse workshop
During the evening Outreach sessions, the MVH Youth Team in partnership with South Wales Police will be delivering workshops to 11 to 25 year olds around the dangers of alcohol, drugs and the impact substances have on your wellbeing.

‘In My House’ film distribution
An animated film about domestic abuse by children and young people to parents and caeres will be circulated on social media.
Information stands in hospital receptions
Information stands about support for differing mental health issues will be located at Royal Glamorgan Hospital, Prince Charles Hospital and Princess of Wales Hospital.
Social media Wellness Week
Bridgend County Borough Council’s Youth Services run a weekly #wellnesswednesday and will be posting positive mental health strategies, support organisations and relevant information for young people and their families during Safeguarding Week.
Chill and chat
Barod will be hosting a relaxing space for young people under 25 to char, learn about substance misuse and talk about the pressures that young people face today.
Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday - 8pm until 9pm
Thursday – 7pm until 8pm
