Bridgend businesses reminded of waste responsibilities

Businesses in Bridgend are being urged to help keep the town centre clean by disposing of their waste responsibly.

Following some recent examples of trade waste piling up on the streets, or being dumped among domestic waste, Bridgend County Borough Council is working in partnership with the Bridgend Business Improvement District (BID) to remind and aid traders with their responsibilities.

Justin Jenkins from the CF31 BID said: “We want to make Bridgend as welcoming as possible for visitors and a pleasant place to do business, and we’re sure that all local businesses share our aspirations for keeping the town centre clean.

“We’ve written to all businesses to remind them that they are legally responsible for the management of all the waste that their premises produce. Business rates do not cover recycling and waste collections, so all businesses must make their own arrangements.

All businesses have a duty of care to ensure that they store and dispose of their waste responsibly. We want to work together with all traders to make them fully aware that their trade waste should be handled or dealt with by people or businesses with a waste transfer licence.

Over the next few months, officers from our waste team will be carrying out spot checks to ensure that businesses have waste transfer notes to demonstrate that they are carrying out their duty of care correctly. Don’t forget that CF31 BID are on hand to help businesses reach the standards required.
