Bridgend school first to be awarded for autism support

Bryntirion Comprehensive School has become the first school in Bridgend County Borough to be awarded for its efforts to support autism in the school community.

The school has spent the last 2 years raising awareness of Autism amongst all of its stakeholders – teachers, support staff, pupils, cleaners, site facilities staff, Governing Body and administrative staff. 

Evidence gathered and the strategies put in place have been evaluated by Autism Wales resulting in Bryntirion becoming the 21^st secondary school in Wales to receive the Learning with Autism Secondary School Award.

Autism Wales say the award recognises a whole school approach to improving awareness and understanding of the needs of autistic pupils.

Ravi Pawar, headteacher at Bryntirion, said: “We are delighted to be the recipient of the schools Learning With Autism Secondary Schools Programme.

“The programme was evaluated by Autism Wales and we are the first school in Bridgend County Borough to receive the award.

“We are very proud of this achievement and of all our learners with autism.

“Bryntirion has a tradition of providing a caring and secure environment for all pupils and has the necessary expertise in supplying specialist support for pupils with Additional Learning Needs.

“We take pride in our breadth of provision for Additional Learning Needs and there is a resource base for pupils with communication difficulties.

“This is having such a positive effect on the experience of school enjoyed by our autistic pupils.”

We are incredibly proud of Bryntirion Comprehensive School’s achievements in earning this award from Autism Wales.

It is a fitting testament to all the hard work and effort the school puts in to ensure children with autism get the best school experience possible.
