The car park at Rest Bay in Porthcawl has become the latest public car park to close in order to deter people from flouting pandemic regulations.
It follows an increase in the number of people who are driving to the coast and Welsh beauty spots in order to go for a walk or to undertake exercise.
With alert level four restrictions still in place across Wales, Bridgend County Borough Council, South Wales Police and Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board are urging residents to stay at home wherever possible, and to avoid driving to areas such as Porthcawl.
With electronic signage in place to remind drivers and spot checks underway by South Wales Police, the Rest Bay car park joins similar closures that have already been carried out at Bedford Park and the privately-owned Newton Beach car park.
Council Leader Huw David said: “With local infection rates falling but still very high, now is not the time to let our guard down or to start trying to get around the restrictions.
“Under the alert level four rules, people are able to leave home for exercise, but that activity should start and finish at home – it should not involve driving to another area for this purpose.
“This risks undoing all of the hard work and effort that has been demonstrated by communities throughout the county borough, and we will be observing the situation closely to see if further action is required.”
Other council-maintained car parks located throughout the county borough will remain open, but will be monitored for compliance.
