Cemeteries and parks to remain closed

All council-maintained parks and cemeteries in Bridgend county borough will remain temporarily closed to the public as a result of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

 

The cemeteries, which include the grounds of Coychurch Crematorium, will remain closed until further notice to help limit the risk of exposure.

 

Meanwhile, both Maesteg Welfare Park and Griffin Park in Porthcawl will continue to be locked.

We will continue to keep the temporary closure of parks and cemeteries under close review, and will open them again as soon as it is safe to do so.

We must remember that people are risking their lives to treat patients with coronavirus. They are not immune, and as several have sadly lost their lives in hospitals while caring for those with Covid-19, we need to do all we can to limit the risk of infection.

When it comes to recreation, the vast majority of public rights of way remain open throughout the county borough, and people have enough space to enjoy the outdoors without the risk of being in close proximity to one another. We understand that this may cause temporary inconvenience for some residents, but we will keep a close eye on the situation to ensure that they can be re-opened as soon as possible.

Archbishop George Stack, Archdiocese of Cardiff, said: “We recognise the need to follow the appropriate guidance and advice given for the public health of all at this time.

“For now, this includes the closure of cemeteries to the public except for a burial service, when the maximum of 10 people would be allowed to congregate.

“Throughout the Diocese, there are services and prayers being live streamed in our churches where people are very welcome to join.”
