Darren Mepham, the chief executive of Bridgend County Borough Council, has announced that he intends to leave the authority in early 2019.
Mr. Mepham has accepted a new role as chief executive for Barnet and Southgate College in North London. He will continue to act as chief executive at the council before leaving in January.
This has not been an easy decision as I enjoy working here at Bridgend County Borough Council.
It has been six years since I joined the authority, and in that time I have been really proud of what we have achieved in the face of some very challenging circumstances.
While I have decided to take on this new challenge for the usual mix of personal and career-related reasons, I remain firmly focused on continuing to serve as chief executive, and will be supporting the senior management team as they consider a range of short and medium-term options.

Councillor Huw David, Leader of Bridgend County Borough Council, added: “I’d like to congratulate Darren on his new role, and thank him for his sterling efforts of the last six years. We have always been an ambitious council, and continue to have a lot of transformative change underway.
“This includes developments with the change in health board, working through difficult financial challenges to agree a balanced budget, exploring further collaboration with our neighbouring councils, and much more.
“With the chief executive still with us until the New Year and a very strong team of experienced senior managers in place across the organisation, I am confident that our ambitious programmes will all continue to move forward in the meantime.”
