Consultation to launch over proposed facilities for children with additional learning needs

Parents, staff, pupils, and other interested parties are set to have their say on proposed learning resource centres for pupils with additional learning needs at two Bridgend County Borough schools.

The centres at Ysgol Cynwyd Sant and Tremains Primary School would cater for pupils with moderate learning disabilities and autistic spectrum disorders.

The proposed plans would see centres established at both schools from 1 September 2022, giving pupils access to individual, small-group and whole class experiences.

It comes at a time when local authorities across the United Kingdom are experiencing a rise in the demand for services for children and young people with additional learning needs.

A consultation will launch to provide parents, staff, pupils and governing bodies at both schools as well as other interested parties with an opportunity to voice their opinions on the proposals.

Bridgend County Borough has taken a proactive approach to the rising demand for services for those with additional learning needs.

These learning resources centres are key in ensuring that pupils with a diagnosis of moderate learning difficulties or autistic spectrum disorders have access to mainstream education experiences with their peers and also have the opportunity to reintegrate into mainstream where appropriate.

Pupils using the centre will benefit from being part of a mainstream community school while also benefitting from the specialist provision. We hope, when the consultation opens, that those connected with each of these schools take advantage of the opportunity to have their say on the proposals and help shape the future of provision for pupils with additional learning needs in the county borough.
