Council approves funding for Covid-19 food poverty grant scheme

Bridgend County Borough Council has agreed to provide more than £44,000 funding towards a grant scheme designed to tackle food poverty associated with the Covid-19 coronavirus pandemic.

Administrated on the council’s behalf by the Bridgend Association of Voluntary Organisations, the scheme will enable food banks and other charities throughout the area to distribute food, purchase equipment such as fridges, freezers and cookers, provide specialist training and food handling qualifications for volunteers, and more.

The Food Poverty Grant scheme will be focused on alleviating food poverty across Bridgend County Borough during the Covid-19 coronavirus pandemic.

We are doing all we can to help our residents as the outbreak continues, and this scheme should prove to be extremely useful in supporting food banks and other organisations in accessing, storing and distributing good-quality nutritious food for the benefit of local people.

I am grateful to BAVO for overseeing it, and for working with the council to help support vulnerable local residents.

Councillor Dhanisha Patel, Cabinet Member for Wellbeing and Future Generations

The funding has been provided by Welsh Government via the Welsh Local Government Association.
