Council marks 25th anniversary of Srebrenica genocide

Bridgend County Borough Council is marking the 25^th anniversary of the 1995 Srebrenica genocide as part of Srebrenica Memorial Week (5-12 July).

 

The council’s social media channels will feature a video of Mayor Stuart Baldwin lighting a candle in memory of the 8,000 Muslim men and boys who were murdered because of their religious identity in what the mayor has called ‘the worst atrocity on European soil since the Second World War’.

 

Under the theme of ‘Every Action Matters’, the international event is seeking to encourage people to reflect upon their own behaviour and choices, and demonstrate that those who stand up and unite against hatred can and do make a difference.

This year marks 25 years since the genocide in Srebrenica in Bosnia–Herzegovina, where more than 8,000 Muslim boys and men were murdered in the worst atrocity on European soil since the Second World War.

We come together now to remember the victims of the Srebrenica genocide, to honour those who survived, and to light a candle in remembrance of the lives lost and destroyed by hatred.

Council Leader Huw David added: “No matter what our backgrounds might be, it is now more important than ever for us to come together to celebrate diversity and to stand in solidarity against hatred and discrimination.

“We reaffirm our commitment against all forms of hatred and prejudice which targets people because of their religion, ethnicity, gender, sexuality or beliefs.”
