Council marks National Apprenticeship Week

Bridgend County Borough Council has put the spotlight on 26 current apprentices and 21 former apprentices at a special event to mark National Apprenticeship Week 2019.

Since it set up its apprenticeship programme in 2013, the council has successfully supported 62 apprentices, many of whom have since gone on to work full time for the local authority in a wide range of occupations including Business Administration, Learning and Development and ICT services.

Apprenticeships allow individuals the opportunity to develop important professional skills and gain valuable experience while earning a wage and working towards an accredited qualification.

Among Bridgend County Borough Council’s many current apprentices blazing a trail in their careers is Jack Edwards, a building control apprentice, who said: “Apprenticeships help you to pick up lots of valuable experience which will be beneficial for my future and help me get a head start in my career. I definitely recommend them!”

Twenty four year-old Loren Stephens joined the local authority as an apprentice in Learning and Development has since landed a full time job. She said: “Doing an apprenticeship has helped me to get into a career that I love, whilst allowing me to develop my skills and gain further qualifications.”

An apprenticeship can often prove to be that all-important first rung on the ladder that helps lift someone into a new career. Bringing our past and present apprentices together enabled them to discuss their experiences with managers and senior staff so that we can strengthen our apprenticeship programme even further.
