Council plans ahead to help prevent flooding

The cabinet of Bridgend County Borough Council will receive a report next week on how the authority is working to prevent flooding throughout the area.

Cabinet members will consider the Annual Flood Investigation Report 2019-20, which outlines flooding incidents during that period, what their causes were and what work has taken place to mitigate the chance of future flooding.

The report outlines how the majority of incidents were caused by the sheer volume of rain which fell during severe weather, overwhelming the drainage system and local watercourses at several key points throughout the county borough.

It also considers how these incidents related to private networks and watercourses as well as assets owned by the council and partner organisations, and details what work has been carried out or is due to be carried out in the near future.

Following the flooding incident and associated investigations, a series of interventions have been undertaken to manage flood risk, throughout the areas affected. These include additional drainage works at Talbot Street, major cleansing of the culvert network within Yr Ysfa and Commercial Street Ogmore Vale, an overview report to identify possible upstream interventions within Heol Faen and localised review of existing drainage networks within Llangeinor.

The report describes how the council uses a mix of visual inspections and CCTV surveys to determine the condition of drains and culverts, and arranges for work to be undertaken to prevent root damage or the build-up of silt as well as using specialist equipment to clear blockages.

The report will be discussed by cabinet members on June 30.
