Council reveals more details on plans for new Porthcawl bus terminus

Bridgend County Borough Council has revealed further details on its plans to provide Porthcawl with an all-new bus terminus.

The Porthcawl Terminus was revealed to be one of the local projects that the council is developing as part of the South East Wales Metro Plus initiative.

With grant funding from the Cardiff Capital City Region Deal and Welsh Government in place, feasibility and design studies are to be carried out to determine whether it will be possible to develop the terminus at the top end of the Salt Lake car park.

If successful, the new terminus, which has been included as part of the overall regeneration masterplan for the town, would be located opposite a new food store also planned for that end of the site.

The terminus would feature around six bus bays and incorporate a modern canopy and shelter with digital information boards and capacity for accommodating electric vehicles.

While we are very much at an early stage, I am pleased to confirm that plans are in development to provide Porthcawl with a new, dedicated bus terminus.

Our intention is to establish a modern facility which will provide dedicated transport links for the benefit of residents and visitors alike, and offer a park-and-ride service between the town and the newly expanded Pyle railway station.

If the feasibility study is successful, the proposal will of course be subject to public engagement as part of any formal planning process, and I am looking forward to seeing the plans develop further.

The Porthcawl Terminus forms part of the metro enhancement framework for the Cardiff Capital Region City Deal, which is seeking to develop improved links between Maesteg, Bridgend, Porthcawl and Cardiff as part of a pipeline of future transport projects.

The first phase of these includes improvements at Pyle railway station to create a park-and-ride service with increased capacity for up to 75 cars, new cycle parking bays, charging points for electric vehicles and enhanced links with Village Farm Industrial Estate.

The second phase of the programme includes providing a new railway station in Brackla, and enhancing the capacity of the Penprysg road-rail bridge at Pencoed to allow the level crossing to be closed.

The Metro Plus programme was initially agreed in March 2019 when the Cardiff Capital Region City Deal, in collaboration with Welsh Government and Transport for Wales, identified a proposed £50m programme of local transport schemes to support the implementation of the South Wales Metro.
