Discounted dining aims to support local businesses

People in Bridgend County Borough can take advantage of a new Government initiative which aims to support restaurants, pubs and cafes by offering up to 50 per cent off the cost of a meal.
The ‘Eat Out To Help Out’ scheme is offering heavy discounts on food and non-alcoholic drinks throughout August and applies to all food and non-alcoholic drinks which are consumed on the premises on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
The scheme aims to protect paid roles within the hospitality sector following the impact of the Covid-19 coronavirus. Featuring a maximum discount per person of £10, it could save e.g. a family of four up to £40 per meal.
A wide range of restaurants, pubs and cafes located throughout Bridgend County Borough ranging from the second-oldest pub in Wales at Llangynwyd to coffee shops in Porthcawl are among the 72,000 establishments that are participating in the scheme, as well as numerous brand names further afield such as Pizza Express, Costa Coffee, Nando’s and more.
To support the scheme, a restaurant finder has been launched which uses a postcode locater to list all of the participating businesses within five miles of an address. Find a restaurant that’s registered for the Eat Out to Help Out scheme.
National statistics suggest that while 1.8m people are employed across the UK within food and beverage services such as pubs, restaurants and cafes, around 80 per cent of hospitality firms stopped trading in April as the pandemic took hold.
Bridgend County Borough Council has already provided a wide range of support for local businesses, and I hope that this Government scheme will serve to encourage people to use local restaurants, pubs and cafes in a safe, responsible manner.
