Flood warnings in place as schools close early

With a ‘yellow’ alert in place for heavy rain across the region, a number of local schools have closed early today (Friday 28 February).

A flood warning - issued by Natural Resources Wales – is also in force for the River Ewenny at Cwrt Gwilym, Pencoed, and Ewenny Village.

The schools which have closed include Abercerdin Primary, Croesty Primary, CCYD, Pencoed Comprehensive School, Heronsbridge School, Betws Primary, Blaengarw Primary, Nantymoel Primary, Brackla Primary, The Bridge, YGG Llangynwyd, Cefn Cribwr Primary, Caerau Primary and Bryncethin Primary.

Bridgend College has also closed early.

Cwmfelin Primary and Maesteg Comprehensive Schools are on high alert and will make a decision soon.

The rainfall associated with Storm Jorge is now impacting the area with the rain forecast to continue until 5am on Saturday, February 29. Calls are coming in from all over the county regarding issues caused by the heavy rainfall and adverse weather, and we urge people to take care while out on the roads.

A number of our schools have closed at lunchtime today. Highways teams and fire crews are currently in attendance at Llangeinor Road, Garw Valley with the road currently closed due to flooding. We are monitoring the river levels across the county, including in Bridgend town centre where we are ready to put the flood gates up if required.

Our staff will be working around the clock to help keep the county borough safe and moving, and arrangements for standby crews, machinery, a JCB and chainsaw operators have been made to cover through Friday night and Saturday during both the day and the night.

- Main Road, Coychurch

- The New Inn road dipping bridge has been closed in Merthyr Mawr
