Football fans urged to enjoy Euros on home soil

Football fans in Bridgend County Borough are being advised to play safe and enjoy Euro 2020 on home soil.

Wales’ national football team have enjoyed success at this year’s delayed European Championship and will face Denmark at Amsterdam’s Johan Cruyff Arena on Saturday June 26 in the competition’s Last 16.

But fans in Bridgend County Borough have been advised not to travel to The Netherlands to back Bale and co and to catch the action at home in Wales.

It comes after Wales’ health minister, Eluned Morgan, announced that Dutch police would not be “letting any Welsh fans into the country”.

The Netherlands is on the UK's amber list, meaning travel is not advised, while the UK and Denmark are not on the Netherlands' safe country list.

Fans can still catch the big match at pubs and clubs across the County Borough and are reminded to take all reasonable measures to minimise the risk of exposure to, or the spread of, coronavirus including pre-booking tables with details of all members of the group and providing contact details for contact tracing purposes.

In a statement echoed by Bridgend County Borough Council leader Huw David, Baroness Morgan encouraged fans to “stay here and watch the matches carefully”.

We strongly advise that football fans in Bridgend County Borough follow the guidance from the Welsh Government and refrain from travelling to The Netherlands to support the team.

We encourage fans to watch Saturday’s game in Wales while taking current coronavirus restrictions into consideration.

We must not become complacent – the pandemic is not over. If you choose to mix, do it outdoors rather than indoors wherever possible, and remember that the current outdoor limit is 30 people while the indoor limit is six people from six different households.
