Free dog waste bags to be supplied along popular dog walking routes

Free dog waste bags are going to be supplied along 15 popular dog walking routes in Bridgend County Borough this autumn.
The new dog waste bag stations will be installed by Bridgend County Borough Council after being successfully trialled at Maesteg Welfare Park and the Woodlands playing fields in Pencoed.
Dog fouling is one of the biggest frustrations that constituents report. Since we installed these dog waste bag stations at two specific problem-spots last year, there has certainly been an improvement with more dog owners bagging and binning their pet’s waste.
So, we’re pleased to have secured funding to install more of them in parts of Porthcawl, Coychurch, Tondu, Heol Y Cyw, Ogmore Vale, Pyle, Kenfig Hill, Brackla, Maesteg and Pencoed where we currently have issues with a minority of selfish dog owners.
We consulted with town and community councils over the plans and they provided locations where they felt there were particular problems. There’s absolutely no excuse for any dog owner not to pick up after their pet. Please be considerate to others – bag it, bin it.

Last month, Cabinet Members from the council also agreed to hold a public consultation later this year over a proposal to introduce fines of up to £100 for dog owners who don’t pick up after their pets in public areas.
If residents support the idea, it will also become an offence for a dog owner not to be carrying any dog waste bags when out walking their pooch, or to fail to keep them under control.
Councillor Young added: “We are determined to clean up our streets and parks by reducing dog fouling. It’s disgusting, it stinks and it’s dangerous for children. I urge all dog owners to be responsible – when you leave dog mess on our streets and in our parks you are spoiling our communities. Dog fouling is disgusting, it stinks and it’s dangerous for children. We’ll be announcing how residents can share their views in the public consultation soon.
“I’d also like to stress the point that dog waste bags can be thrown into any public bin, not just the ones that are specifically for dog waste. Or, if you cannot find a public bin, please take the bag home with you and bin it there.”
