Further fundraising planned for two dementia gardens

Bridgend Resource Centre and Cwm Calon Community Hub are planning to install new dementia gardens after plans were put on hold by the Covid-19 pandemic.

At Bridgend Resource Centre, a landscaping design was run as a competition among students and staff at Pencoed College with the best design chosen with input from Age Concern, people who attend Bridgend Resource Centre and other stakeholders.

While the project was halted by the coronavirus outbreak, fund raising continued with the sum total currently standing at £13,194.

Now, more fundraising is planned over the autumn and winter months to reach the £25K target needed and it is hoped that work will begin next spring.

Meanwhile, Cwm Calon Community Hub in Maesteg, which supports people with dementia and learning difficulties, was awarded a £1,000 grant for a similar garden earlier this year after applying for the Tesco Community Grants scheme run in conjunction with community charity Groundwork.

The garden will be designed with the input of those attending the Community Hub and it is hoped that work will be completed next summer.

As part of the plans, a patio area will be revamped to create a barbecue and seating area, with new garden furniture and planters, providing opportunities for relaxation and engagement.

The past year has been challenging for everyone, particularly our more vulnerable residents, so it’s brilliant to see projects like this that will support our communities as we recover from the pandemic.

Gardens like these offer a wide range of benefits to those suffering with dementia, helping people to gain regular access to fresh air and exercise and a quiet space away from others.
