Funding has been accepted for a host of green features at the Sunnyside Wellness Village development.
A report agreed by the Cabinet of Bridgend County Borough Council at its meeting on Tuesday 9 February outlined that Welsh Government has approved funding of £315,268 for the features through its Transforming Towns - Green Infrastructure and Biodiversity grant scheme.
Councillor Richard Young, Cabinet Member for Communities, said: “Green infrastructure is a fundamental element of the Wellness Village concept. Key features at the Sunnyside development will include the planting of about 150 new trees, a communal growing area, natural play area, protection and cultivation of existing trees and other green areas.
“This regeneration of a high-profile site in the centre of Bridgend aims to contribute towards the development of a vibrant, sustainable local community with multifunctional green spaces and also links in with the council’s decarbonisation plans as well as the aims of the Bridgend town centre masterplan.”
The £23m Sunnyside Wellness Village scheme is being developed by Linc Cymru Housing Association in partnership with Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board, and Bridgend County Borough Council.
It will provide a brand-new mixed-use development, on the site of the demolished Bridgend Council Offices and former Magistrates Court, consisting of 59 affordable homes, a healthcare centre with consultation and treatment rooms, GP practice, specialist dental unit, and pharmacy, and associated works including landscaping and infrastructure.
Richard Hallett, Development Manager at Linc, said: “When we began planning Sunnyside Wellness Village, the inclusion of green space was a priority.
“By incorporating green infrastructure, such as the natural play area and communal growing space, we hope to enhance the area for the enjoyment and wellbeing of future tenants, and staff and service users of the health centre.
“The council’s support of this objective demonstrates their commitment to turning aspiration into delivery and we look forward to seeing this forward-thinking investment come to life at Sunnyside Wellness Village.”
The council will now enter into a funding agreement with Linc Cymru for delivery of the green elements of the development.
