Maesteg Canoe Club has been awarded £1,455 from the Community Chest scheme so that it can introduce new stand-up paddleboard sessions to encourage even more local people to take up water sports.
The club, which was set up almost 30 years ago, will use the grant funding to buy three brand new paddleboards and buoyancy aids.
Community Chest Grant Scheme is a Sport Wales initiative run locally by Bridgend County Borough Council, with funding applications agreed by a panel of volunteers. The scheme can provide grants of up to £1,500 and a total of £24,030 has been allocated to Bridgend County Borough clubs and organisations so far this year.
At the panel’s most recent meeting, funding was shared between 18 different groups covering a wide range of sports including surf lifesaving, athletics, boxing, tennis, cricket, dance, golf and many more.
Another of the successful applicants was the Bridgend Jets Senior Netball team. They netted £1,500 which they will put towards training a number of volunteers in first aid, purchase of equipment and the use of facilities to help boost the number of players playing in their local recreational league.
The Community Chest scheme is all about providing new or improved opportunities for local people of all ages and abilities to take part in sports and physical activities.
As well as supporting established sports it is great to see the scheme opening up greater opportunities for people to take part in something different. I certainly welcome anything that enables local residents to get more active, more often
I hope that even more sports clubs, groups and organisations get in touch with proposals during the remainder of the current financial year.

A further £32,886 of funding is available for clubs to apply for before the end of the financial year, and any clubs wishing to find out more or submit an application should visit the Sport Wales website or contact Andrew Jones by calling 01656 642745 or emailing Andrew.jones2@bridgend.gov.uk.
