New Bridgend Indoor Market public toilets

New public toilets are due to open later this week at the Bridgend indoor market.

Located by the rear entrance, one of the two toilets will be wheelchair accessible and also contain babychanging facilities.

The toilets will require people to pay 30p to use them which will then go towards upkeep and maintenance costs.

The new toilets have been built in partnership with Bridgend Town Council which provided £10,000 towards the cost, the Rhiw shopping centre and market traders. It is part of an ongoing project by the local authority to give the indoor market a new lease of life.

As part of the revamp which began around 18 months ago, a new central square was created in the market for the public and traders to use for specialist events, family entertainment and children’s play areas. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, this unfortunately has not been able to be used. However, we are looking at how we can use it safely for events like craft fayres in the near future.

We continue to do all we can to help support local businesses at this time, this includes concessionary rates for market traders and the promotion of our shops within the ‘shop local’ message.

Last year a series of illustrative panels providing information about the market’s rich history were set up to welcome shoppers - and the market bell which dates back to 1837 was relocated to the main entrance.                   

In 2018, Bridgend County Borough Council introduced a new rent system and flexible lease terms for new stallholders, with existing stallholders benefitting from significant rent reductions.

The new public toilets are due to be open from Friday, October 9. They will be managed by the market traders association.
