A new mayor of Bridgend County Borough Council has been elected at the local authority’s annual meeting.
Councillor John Spanswick, who is one of the councillors for Brackla, is now the new mayor with Councillor Martyn Jones, who represents Bettws, appointed deputy mayor for the year ahead.
At the annual meeting on 19 May, Cllr Spanswick said he was honoured and thankful to accept the mayoral role.
I never expected to become mayor but after entering my 23rd year as a county borough councillor and nearly 30 years as a community councillor for Brackla, it is an honour to take on the role.
I shall endeavour to fulfil and promote the role and office of mayor to the best of my ability by supporting community events wherever and whenever possible whilst at all times keeping in mind the need for us all to stay safe as we emerge from the pandemic.
I do sincerely hope to return to Nantymoel during my forthcoming year in office and help promote the Ogmore Valley along with all the other wonderful areas we have within the county borough of Bridgend.
Bridgend County Borough Council Mayor Councillor John Spanswick
Cllr Spanswick, who was previously the deputy mayor, and his consort Susan Spanswick, have chosen to support the local support group Lads & Dads and Bridgend Carer’s Centre for the civic year.
As well as chairing full meetings of council and representing the council and local community at formal and ceremonial occasions, the mayor acts as the borough’s ambassador at a range of events such as citizenship ceremonies for residents completing the process of becoming a British citizen and events for charitable/voluntary organisations.
The deputy mayor acts as the mayor’s representative at all events, including chairing council, if the mayor is unavailable.
