New skateboard and BMX park coming to Pencoed

Cabinet Members from Bridgend County Borough Council have authorised the Community Asset Transfer of the remaining tennis court at Pencoed Recreation Ground to Pencoed Town Council so that they can convert the site.

The town council had originally expressed their interest in a Community Asset Transfer in January 2017, having already taken on the running of the other tennis court at the Felindre Road site in 2013 which they then transformed into a multi-games use area.

To support their plans, Pencoed Town Council successfully secured a £20,000 grant from Bridgend County Borough Council’s ‘Town and Community Council Fund’ in March this year to put towards the overall £59,000 cost of the skateboard park. Planning permission was then granted in April 2018.

The tennis court isn’t used very much due to its poor state of repair, and given our current financial situation we are not in a position to improve the facility unfortunately.

For many years, Pencoed Town Council has shown real enthusiasm for taking on the site as they are keen to create more facilities in Pencoed that will be welcomed by young people in the area. They have also indicated that they will consider providing tennis facilities elsewhere in the future. So it is a win-win situation.”

Pencoed Town Council has confirmed that the new skateboard and BMX park will be regularly inspected to ensure that it is kept safe and tidy. A 2.5m high acoustic barrier will be provided around the skateboard park to keep any noise disruption to a minimum.
