Playgrounds upgraded with new inclusive equipment

Seven playgrounds across Bridgend County Borough are being revamped with brand new inclusive play equipment.

The fun new additions, which are suitable for all abilities including wheelchair users, have already been installed at the Pencoed Recreation Ground and Waun Llwyd in Nantymoel during recent weeks, and will appear at five other playgrounds by the end of June.

Children playing at Griffin Park in Porthcawl will soon be able to enjoy an inclusive basket swing and a new slide/house which will feature wheelchair accessible activities.

The new apparatus at Maesteg Welfare Park will include a play telescope, climbing net, finger trace panels, double basket swing and an inclusive picnic table.

The playground at Newbridge Fields in Bridgend will get new safe surfacing, a 1.2m high slide with accessible stairs, an inclusive basket swing, a new ‘klump’ springer, a sparkling butterfly play panel, and an accessible path.

In Pontycymer, the Victoria Street playground is being painted with fun floor graphics to help with road safety awareness, while an inclusive seesaw, music panels, and inclusive basket swing will also be installed.

New floor graphics are also on their way to the playground next to Ynysawdre Swimming Pool, as well as new surfacing and an inclusive roundabout, swing seat and basket swing.

These bright new additions will make all of these playgrounds accessible for all children to enjoy. We’ve received many requests in recent years for there to be more opportunities for children with disabilities to have a greater choice of apparatus available to them at our playgrounds so we are absolutely thrilled to be able to make these improvements.

Disruption will be kept to a minimum while the new equipment is being added, so please bear with us while the work is carried out

Councillor Young added: “While we are very excited about these improvements, it brings to mind the senseless vandalism that we saw a few weeks ago in North Cornelly where new play equipment was set on fire. It goes without saying that we hope this new equipment will be treated respectfully by all users.”
