All schools in Bridgend county borough will close on Friday, December 18 as planned.
However, the last day for sixth form students to physically attend school will be Friday, December 11. Secondary schools will provide online learning for all sixth form students only during the week commencing Monday, December 14.
All pupils of statutory school age, and those attending nursery settings, will attend school up to, and including, Friday, December 18.
Parents and carers can be assured that this decision has been taken following extensive discussions with Welsh Government, and representations from schools and unions. The concerns of all parties have therefore been taken into consideration in making this important decision.
Closing schools as originally planned on December 18 will ensure the continuity of learning for all our learners. We would like to thank all parents, carers and staff in our schools for their ongoing support. All school staff, local authority officers and elected members continue to do everything possible to prioritise the safety and educational needs of our children.”
Bridgend County Borough Council’s cabinet member for education and regeneration Charles Smith
A Welsh Local Government Association spokesman said: “These past few months have been incredibly difficult and the circumstances remain challenging for all of us.
“The tremendous efforts of teachers, school staff, children and young people in keeping themselves, each other and their communities safe have enabled our schools to be kept open during this difficult time.
“Local authorities and Welsh Government both want to see a coherent, consistent and clear approach being taken nationwide. We are pleased that we have been able to agree on an all-Wales plan, which also takes account of local circumstances.”
A Welsh Government spokesman added: “Our priority remains ensuring that education continues for all children and young people with as little disruption as possible.
“The Welsh Government and local authorities would expect schools to operate as usual up until the last day of term, but of course recognise that for exceptional local public health and safety reasons moving to remote learning may be considered an alternative option.
"We will continue to hold regular discussions with local authorities and unions on these matters as we have done throughout the pandemic.”
