The Mayor of Bridgend County Borough has visited the Sarn Community Hub to see how their knitting and crafting groups are bringing local residents together.
Held at the Adult Support Centre in Merfield Close, the sessions were introduced last summer in partnership with Awen Libraries after knitting and crafting were chosen by residents as activities they would like to see offered in their local area.
Since then, attendee numbers have grown steadily and always welcome new members. The knitting group meets on Monday mornings (10am – 12pm) and a craft group on Thursday mornings (10am – 12pm).
It is great to see that the community hubs are going from strength to strength. The knitting and crafting sessions are suitable for all abilities, and are aimed at anyone who fancies making new friends, wants to have fun picking up an old hobby again, or would like to try their hand at something new. Clubs like these are particularly beneficial in helping to tackle social isolation and loneliness in our communities.
After his visit, the Mayor of Bridgend County Borough, Councillor John McCarthy said:
As well as Sarn, community hubs can also be found in Maesteg, Pyle and Bridgend. Each community hub has a range of facilities including numerous meeting rooms, sensory rooms, accessible facilities and more. For more information, or if you are interested in starting your own community group at one of the hubs, please email yourcommunityhub@bridgend.gov.uk or contact Sharon Gronland on 01656 815254.
