Do you have what it takes to become the next Anton du Beke? If so, it’s time to shake and shimmy your way into ‘Strictly Cymru’ – Wales’ first inclusive dance competition - coming to Bridgend County Borough in January 2020!
‘Strictly Cymru’ is organised by UK charity, Leonard Cheshire Wales, that works to support disabled people and individuals to live, learn and work as independently as they choose, whatever their ability.
The competition, supported by Bridgend County Borough Council and in partnership with Paradance UK aims to improve health, wellbeing and access to active lifestyles for disabled people across Wales.
There will be six heats across Wales, and the fourth heat will be hosted at the Bethlehem Life Centre in Cefn Cribwr, Bridgend. Over two days, 23 and 24 January 2020, participants will be invited to compete in either the wheelchair category or the inclusive category.
Day one will see competitors complete a workshop and learn a routine and day two will give competitors the chance to attend a refresher workshop to rehearse and finally perform their routine in front of the judges.
Bridgend’s very own dance champions, Simon Green and Diane Carter from the Bridgend Coalition of Disabled People and Welsh Para Dance Club UK 2019 bronze champions will also be providing a demonstration at this heat.
The lucky winners will then be offered 1-2-1 lessons with professional dance instructors to help them rock and roll all the way to the Grand Final on Saturday 2 May, where they will perform their routine under the glitter ball!
It has been a brilliant experience for everyone and a great opportunity for me to meet new people. Everybody should be able to learn how to shake their shimmy whatever their ability!
Rhodri Thompson, one of last year’s winners
