The brand new Porthcawl Water Sports Centre is taking shape in Rest Bay, and the tenants who will be operating there will be announced in the spring.
The centre is being built thanks to £1.5m of EU funding via the Welsh Government’s new Tourism Attractor Destination programme, which has been launched by Visit Wales to create 13 must-see tourist destinations.
When it opens this summer, the centre will provide a base for local water sports groups and clubs as well as offering a café/bistro upstairs, an ice cream kiosk downstairs, and toilet facilities, showers, changing cubicles, a function room and more.
Rest Bay offers one of the finest backdrops in the UK, and I’m really looking forward to enjoying a coffee while admiring the view from the new water sports centre when it opens later this year.
After advertising the tenancy opportunities for around six months, we have considered the submissions and have selected our preferred tenants using set criteria.
While the details cannot be revealed just yet, I must say that the submissions offer some very exciting potential. We’ll now enter into the final lease negotiations, before hopefully being in a position to confirm the occupants soon.

With a building design that incorporates solar technology, a covered area for dog walkers and glazed panels to make the most out of the stunning coastal views, the new centre will be fully accessible to welcome visitors to Rest Bay from other parts of South Wales and beyond.
A new pedestrian crossing will also be installed to establish a safer link between the centre and the famous Blue Flag-winning beach.
