Tonnes of cardboard recycled during lockdown

Residents in Bridgend County Borough recycled 1,470 tonnes of cardboard during the lockdown from the beginning of April to the end of July – an increase of 284 tonnes for the same period in 2019.

The cardboard is sent to various locations throughout the UK, where it is processed and recycled back to make new cardboard products.

Thanks to the recycling efforts of local residents and our waste and recycling crews who have been phenomenal throughout the coronavirus pandemic, we have been able to recycle a record amount of cardboard over the last few months in the county borough.”

Residents have been patient and co-operative over the last few weeks, and I would like to thank them for their efforts while we have dealt with the challenges of the pandemic.

I’m delighted that Kier have now received the newly manufactured sacks, and that deliveries are underway to households which have requested a replacement.”

In July, a delay in the delivery of orange fabric sacks used for cardboard recycling due to the pandemic, meant residents who needed to order a new bag were temporarily asked to use a suitable cardboard box or an alternative bag of their own.

The orange sacks are used for cardboard packaging, egg boxes, birthday cards, waxed drink cartons and more.
