Work soon to start on Cowbridge Road active travel improvements

Work is due to begin next week on active travel improvements between Waterton Roundabout and the railway bridge on Cowbridge Road in Bridgend.

As part of the £715,000 scheme, the footway will be widened and a toucan crossing will be installed at the York Road junction on Cowbridge Road. There will also be carriageway resurfacing undertaken at the junction.

Work is due to start on Monday 9 August for up to 17 weeks.

This section forms an important part of the wider Bridgend to Pencoed active travel route, enabling those who want to walk or cycle to leave their cars at home, helping reduce congestion and environmental pollution.

It links up with the new safe pedestrian and cycle route created earlier this year around Waterton roundabout and will also link into the final major part of the network along Cowbridge Road into the town centre once created – drawings for the final link will shortly be on display at the Civic Offices in Bridgend.

Once complete, the network will connect to the existing active travel network into Brackla, as well as National Cycle Network Route 885 which links the town centre with Bridgend Railway Station, Broadlands and Tondu. As with all road improvements of this scale, some disruption is inevitable but we would like to reassure people, disruption will be kept to a minimum.

Active travel means walking or cycling for everyday short-distance journeys. It covers trips to school, shops, work, services and transport hubs. It can also include the use of electric wheelchairs or mobility scooters. It does not include journeys purely for recreation, or social reasons.
