Action plan to tackle anti-social behaviour in car park

Bridgend County Borough Council is joining forces with South Wales Police to tackle recent incidents of anti-social behaviour in a town centre car park.

It follows concerns around irresponsible behaviour that has seen fire alarms tampered with, litter strewn around and minor acts of vandalism committed within the Rhiw car park.

The local authority is looking at a number of measures to help tackle the issues. They include:

• Installing further CCTV cameras and highlighting the monitoring of CCTV by installing extra signage.
• Increased patrols within the car park from the South Wales Police Neighbourhood Policing Team.
• The movement of CCTV cameras to better capture and monitor anti-social behaviour activity within the car park.
• Increased visits to the car park by the detached youth team to engage and educate those responsible for some of the anti-social behaviour.
• A letter drop to nearby businesses and residents regarding the importance of reporting anti-social behaviour, and offering advice on how to do this.

The Rhiw multi-storey and Cwrt yr Afon housing development is a landmark location within the town centre, and it is disappointing to see this multi-million pound development being misused.

The council and its partners are working closely to monitor any anti-social behaviour, and will take further action if necessary.

Specific individuals have already been identified and are being dealt with by South Wales Police, and I want to send a clear, strong message that this type of behaviour will not be tolerated.

Additional signage will also installed within the car park to advise and remind customers to follow government guidelines around social distancing, hygiene measures, face coverings and more.

Social distancing floor markings will be introduced to remind customers of the need to maintain a safe distance, and increased cleaning will take place around the payment machines to reduce cross contamination.

Some machines will also be temporarily closed off to support social distancing arrangements.
