Active travel works begin on Waterton roundabout

Work has started this week on the creation of a £580,000 safe pedestrian and cycle route around Waterton roundabout.
The active travel route - similar to one created at Coychurch roundabout earlier this year - is being funded by Welsh Government.
It will provide a link to the Brocastle active travel route on the A48 which is currently being built as well as a number of pedestrian routes in the area, providing safe crossing facilities where there are none at the moment.
We recognise the temporary inconvenience to drivers with certain traffic measures being in place but we ask that they bear with us – every effort has been taken to minimise the disruption.
We had hoped to get started on the scheme in the summer and have had it completed by Christmas. However the Covid-19 pandemic has caused a number of delays.
Creating pedestrian and cycling facilities at this junction will make a huge difference – it is a key part of the future network planned and will enable those who want to walk or cycle to leave their cars at home, helping reduce congestion and environmental pollution.

The 16-week project is scheduled to be completed by the end of March 2021. Future plans involve linking the junction to further routes in the pipeline such as the pedestrian and cycle active travel route into the town centre.
A £1.5m safe pedestrian and cycle route linking both Pencoed and Coychurch to Bridgend was completed at the end of March 2020.
It involved the construction of a shared pedestrian and cycle route between Brackla and Bridgend town centre, a shared pedestrian and cycle route connecting Coychurch with both the Waterton Industrial Estate and Retail Park and a shared pedestrian and cycle route between Pencoed and the Pencoed Technology Park.
