Additional temporary toilet facilities provided in Porthcawl

Bridgend County Borough Council (BCBC) has been working with Porthcawl Town Council to help provide temporary additional toilet facilities in the town.

With many cafes, pubs and restaurants not open fully due to Welsh Government coronavirus restrictions, there is a reduced number of toilets available for visitors under the local authority’s comfort scheme which involves small grants to local businesses in return for the business opening up its toilets to non-paying customers.

Earlier this month, temporary toilets were made available at Griffin Park Community Centre as well as the sports pavilion at Rest Bay Playing Fields with both facilities open from 10am to 4pm, seven days a week.

And from this weekend, the Hi Tide Inn in Mackworth Road will open its toilet facilities to residents and visitors.

Following the relaxation of some of the coronavirus pandemic restrictions and a period of good weather, the number of visitors to Porthcawl has increased and with a shortage of toilets available to the public, there is a need to provide temporary facilities. These facilities are likely to only be open for a few weeks as further restrictions are eased enabling the comfort scheme to get underway once again.

We’re grateful to the local groups and businesses in Porthcawl, such as the Hi Tide Inn, for their help and support in working with the town council to open up their facilities.

We continue to work in partnership with the town council with the plan of providing some further temporary toilets, including disabled facilities, very soon which will be in place until the end of June.

Porthcawl Town Council clerk Kerry Grabham said: “With the welcome increase in visitors to the area in recent weeks and the new Griffin Park toilets due to open soon, we recognised the need to provide further facilities.

“We would like to thank all those who have worked with us in the provision of this temporary measure and look forward to welcoming both new and returning visitors alike.”

Public toilets remain available in John Street and in the Rest Bay Watersports Centre with both facilities providing disabled access.
