Bridgend Bolts score £1,500 from the Community Chest scheme

The Bridgend Bolts Netball Club has netted a grant of £1,500 from the Community Chest scheme so that members of their junior team can progress into senior netball.

The junior team was set up two years ago, and the Community Chest funding is enabling the club to train coaches, umpires and first aiders, and also pay for the hire of equipment and facilities so that the club can run a first and second team for adults.

Community Chest is a Sport Wales initiative that is run locally by Bridgend County Borough Council, with funding applications agreed by a panel of volunteers.

The scheme can provide grants of up to £1,500 and has helped more than £1million be invested into grassroots sport in Bridgend County Borough over the last 17 years.

There is a drastic fall in participation levels when girls leave age grade netball so the Bridgend Bolts were really keen to provide opportunities for existing members to continue to be physically active doing a sport they enjoy.

The Bridgend Bolts are one of many sports clubs and organisations that have benefited from the Community Chest fund and we hope there will be many more success stories.

Councillor Dhanisha Patel, Bridgend County Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Wellbeing and Future Generations.

She continues..

“It shows that the grant scheme can help in so many ways by ensuring that clubs and organisations remain sustainable. Clubs such as this do not only encourage people to be active, but allow people to socialise and make new friends.

“I would like to encourage any eligible community group, sports club or youth club in Bridgend County Borough to apply for this financial support to help more local residents get more active, more often.”

Training for the Bridgend Bolts takes place on Tuesday evenings between 5pm and 8pm (depending on age group) at Bryncethin Sports Centre. More information about the Bolts can be found on their Facebook page.
