Bridgend project a contender for national building excellence award

Designers Oriel Architects and construction contractors Willmott Dixon will be among the contenders at the national Local Authority Building Control Awards in London on 9 November in recognition of the new ‘Y Bont’ café and meeting space they’ve created next to the South Wales Police HQ on Cowbridge Road.

With a similar design to the HQ, yet on a more intimate scale, the new building near the memorial gardens replaced an outdated café that previously stood next to the site.

The project will feature in the ‘Best Inclusive Building’ category at the national awards after successfully winning the Bridgend County Borough round of the competition earlier this year followed by the All Wales awards last month.

We’re thrilled to see this outstanding project make it all the way through from our county borough building excellence awards to the national finals.

The original brief was to design a building suitable for all, and Oriel Architects certainly succeeded, creating a peaceful environment that is accessible for all users and disabilities. We believe it is a strong contender for a national award and wish everyone involved with the project the best of luck.

Councillor Richard Young, Cabinet Member for Communities

Richard Jones, Willmott Dixon Director, said: “We are very proud that this project has made it to the building excellence national finals as it recognises the collaborative work of the designers, consultants, our supply chain, and South Wales Police to deliver this great space.”

Steve Price from Oriel Design Limited said: “Oriel Architects were proud to be part of the team in which everyone involved worked towards producing a building which has exceeded all expectations. It is an environmentally sensitive building which staff enjoy and actively seek to use at all hours of the day and night.”

The annual LABC Building Excellence Awards celebrate excellence from the drawing board to the site. The awards recognise the quality of workmanship shown by constructors to not only comply with building regulations, but to also show the highest standards of technical innovation to construct buildings that meet customer needs and look great.

Details about all of the contenders for this year’s national awards can be found on the LABC website.
