Building Excellence Awards 2020

The winners of Bridgend County Borough Council’s 14th annual Building Excellence Awards have been revealed.

Organised by the council’s building control team, the awards were presented at a recent ceremony in the civic offices by BCBC’s mayor Stuart Baldwin, council leader Huw David and head of planning, Jonathan Parsons.

Focusing on high-quality buildings, there were four categories of award with the winners of each category being judged on their construction and technical excellence:

Category 1: Best change of use of an existing building or conversion

Bradford Construction Limited for the change of use from two dairy barns into three homes on a farm in Laleston.

Category 2: Best public service or educational building

Henstaff Construction Ltd for Bryncethin sports pavilion and community hub, Bryncethin playing fields.

Category 3: Best large community building

Henstaff Construction Ltd for the Watersports Centre, Rest Bay, Porthcawl.

Category 4: Best partnership

Mike Aubrey for his partnership with BCBC on various projects over the last two years, including the conversion of two flats into one home in Newport, and the conversion of a Cardiff coach house into

a home. In an income generation scheme for the council, BCBC checks the plans for Mr Aubrey’s projects in other parts of Wales before they are then submitted to the relevant local building control authorities.

Special Planning Award

EPT Partnership for the Watersports Centre, Rest Bay, Porthcawl.

The winners will now go forward to the Local Authority Building Control (LABC) awards for South Wales, which are taking place at the Vale Resort, Hensol, on May 1, 2020.

The winning South Wales entries then have an opportunity to be recognised on a national scale at the Local Authority Building Control (LABC) National Building Awards in London where they will compete against entries from the rest of the UK.

The Building Excellence Awards are all about encouraging excellent building practice, and our way of acknowledging builders who go the extra mile.

In a world of increasing and changing regulations, and even faster innovation in building technologies, our buildings today are more complex on the inside than they have ever been.

I would like to congratulate all of the winners from this year’s building excellence awards and wish them the best of luck in the regional and national heats.

Council leader Huw David
