Council is ‘fully committed’ towards eliminating discrimination and harassment

Bridgend County Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Wellbeing and Future Generations has said that the local authority is fully committed towards eliminating discrimination and harassment across the county borough.

Councillor Dhanisha Patel chairs the Bridgend Community Cohesion and Equality Forum, which brings the council together with South Wales Police, Show Racism the Red Card and Race Council Cymru to take proactive action and offer support to the county borough’s diverse communities and their needs.

The council has a zero tolerance approach to racism and other forms of harassment and discrimination. We fully support Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic members of our community and our staff, and have a long-term commitment towards tackling any inequalities within our communities.

As part of the council’s compliance with the Public Sector Equality Duty and Equality Act 2010, we publish data annually on our Equality Impact Assessments which ensure that we have taken into consideration all protected characteristics when making service changes and developments.

We fully support peaceful demonstrations as part of the Black Lives Matter movement, but urge all participants to observe social distancing measures and to behave responsibly and safely at all times– it is vital that no-one puts their own life or the lives of others at risk.

People can also offer their support by taking part in the online protest which has been organised by Race Council Cymru in partnership with BAWSO and Wales TUC for this Saturday between 1pm and 3pm.
