Council to consult over updated planning guidance for affordable housing

Wednesday 05 February 2025

The Cabinet of Bridgend County Borough Council has agreed to organise public consultation over plans for updating guidance used by developers when providing affordable housing throughout the area.

Last updated in 2015, the draft Affordable Housing Supplementary Planning Guidance supports the Replacement Local Development Plan, and ensures that policies around affordable housing remain effective, up to date and compliant.

As well as determining how much of a planned housing development must be delivered as affordable homes, the guidance makes sure that this is compliant with related policies on sustainability and placemaking.

It also incorporates specific guidance on the location, type, tenure, size and standard of affordable housing, governs how Section 106 agreements can be used to secure affordable housing provision for the lifetime of a development, includes definitions of who qualifies for affordable housing, and more.

"Recent research has confirmed that Bridgend County Borough needs more than 2,800 social and affordable homes by 2039 if we are to cope with a growing population and increased local demand over the next decade." "The Affordable Housing Supplementary Planning Guidance represents an absolutely essential part of this process, and all views expressed as part of the public consultation will be carefully considered, analysed and used to help hone the focus of the guidance." "We will be confirming details for the consultation soon, so look out for more information on how you can view the draft guidance and have your say."
