Council welcomes £3m funding for new jobs and investment at Sony

Bridgend County Borough Council has welcomed news that Welsh Government is providing Sony UK Technology Centre (UK TEC) with £3m to secure local jobs and invest in its longer-term future in the area.

The money has been provided in addition to almost £500,000 in financial support to help the business meet the challenges of the coronavirus pandemic.

As the main manufacturing and customer service centre for Sony in the UK, the technology centre houses 29 related tenant companies and is a long-standing employer within South Wales.

As well as manufacturing cameras for Sony group since 1999, Sony UK TEC has supplied and serviced cameras that have been used for global sporting events ranging from the Wimbledon Championship to the FIFA World Cup. This funding from the Economic Resilience Fund will protect hundreds of jobs and lay the groundwork for many more.

It will also help manufacturing processes at the site to develop in order to meet future needs, and will be met with further significant investment from the company. This is a welcome sign of confidence in Bridgend County Borough as an area in which large-scale businesses can prosper, and I am delighted that Welsh Government has awarded this funding to Sony.

Councillor Charles Smith, Cabinet Member for Education and Regeneration
