Eight green spaces receive prestigious Green Flag awards

Keep Wales Tidy has unveiled this year’s Green Flag Award winners, with eight parks and green spaces from across Bridgend County Borough recognised for their high standards.

The full Green Flag Award has been achieved by Maesteg Welfare Park, Wilderness Lake in Porthcawl, Coychurch Crematorium, Bryngarw Country Park and Glanrhyd Hospital.

Meanwhile, Caerau Market Garden, Badgers Brook Allotment and the Wilderness Allotment Association have all received a Green Flag Community Award for their efforts towards maintaining top quality green spaces.

The Green Flag Award is a UK-wide partnership, delivered in Wales by Keep Wales Tidy and supported by Natural Resource Wales. Contenders are judged across eight different specifications, including cleanliness, community involvement, and sustainability.

I would like to congratulate all of the winners who can proudly fly green flags at their sites. The two awards deservingly recognise the efforts and dedication of council employees and community volunteers that goes into maintaining well looked-after green spaces. A special mention must go to Coychurch Crematorium which has achieved the full award for a ninth consecutive year. Staff work extremely hard to maintain the tranquil grounds there and are very well- deserving winners of the Green Flag award.

Councillor Richard Young, Bridgend County Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Communities

A record-breaking 201 parks and green spaces, including universities, cemeteries, woodlands and allotments across Wales have met the high standards needed to receive either the full Green Flag Award or the Green Flag Community Award.

Lucy Prisk, the Green Flag Coordinator at Keep Wales Tidy added: “We are delighted to be celebrating another record-breaking year for the Green Flag Awards in Wales. The 201 flags flying are a testament to the dedication and enthusiasm of the staff and volunteers across the county who work tirelessly to maintain Green Flag Award standards.

“I would encourage everyone to get outdoors this summer and enjoy the incredible parks and green spaces we have on our doorstep.”
