Favourites on the menu for National School Meals Week

Pupils across Bridgend County Borough can tuck into their favourite school meals this week as unique menus have been drawn up to mark ‘National School Meals Week’ (12-16 November).

Bangers and mash, burrito boats, roast beef and yorkshire puddings, chicken and leek casserole, curry, and pizza are among the foods that will be served up. They will also enjoy a ‘Big Breakfast day’ and ‘Fish and Chip Friday’.

Over one and a half million nutritious meals are cooked in our schools every year, and I’m sure that pupils will be very excited to see a wide variety of the most popular meals landing on their plates during National School Meals Week.

A great deal of work goes into planning our school meal menus to ensure that they have the correct balance of nutrients to fuel children with all of the energy they need for a busy school day.

Councillor Charles Smith, Bridgend County Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Education and Regeneration

Ahead of National School Meals Week, Tremains Primary School chef Leanne Rees Sheppard spent a day in the kitchen at the James Sommerin restaurant in Penarth. Leanne is the reigning Welsh School Chef of the Year and her visit to the Michelin starred restaurant was organised by the Lead Association for Catering in Education (LACA) and Elygra.

Councillor Smith added: “As well as encouraging children to enjoy the healthy meals that are cooked in schools, National School Meals Week is also about celebrating all of our wonderful talented staff who prepare those meals.”

School meals for 50 local schools can be paid for online via the council’s website, meaning it’s never been easier to pay for children’s meals. Parents, guardians and pupils can find all of the school menus for both primary and secondary schools online.
