Financial support for local businesses

The Welsh Government has introduced a support package for specific businesses listed on the business rates register who have been affected by the Covid-19 coronavirus outbreak.

The new package includes a hundred per cent business rates relief during the 2020-21 period for retail, leisure and hospitality businesses in Wales, which have a rateable value under £500,000.

Bridgend County Borough Council will be looking to automatically award the business rates relief to all eligible businesses as soon as possible, and they will receive a new bill when the award has been made.

A grant of £25,000 will also be offered to businesses in these sectors with a rateable value of between £12,001 and £51,000.

The Welsh Government package also provides a £10,000 grant to all businesses eligible for Small Business Rates Relief with a rateable value of £12,000 or less.

Bridgend County Borough Council will be administering the process and applications for these grants can be made via the council.

A new Coronavirus webpage has been set-up on the My Council section of the council’s website, where businesses can apply for these grants. You will need to complete a simple online form to provide essential information such as bank details and provide a copy of your bank statement showing your bank details.

Once your application has been approved, the grant money will be paid into your specified bank account via the BACS payment process.

Any businesses wishing to check the rateable value of their properties can visit the UK government’s online business rates checker.

We will be looking to award the business rates relief to all eligible parties as soon as possible, and you will receive a new bill when the award has been made.

We appreciate the major challenges that are currently facing local businesses, and our staff will make every effort to get your payments processed as soon as possible.

In the meantime, we urge you not to follow-up by phone calls to the council so that staff can focus on processing the applications instead of fielding calls, be assured we will process your applications as soon as we can.

Council leader, Councillor Huw David
