Free dog waste bag stations installed

Three new dog-waste bag stations have been installed along popular dog walking routes between Llangynwyd and Cwmfelin to encourage owners to pick up after their pets.

The stations, which dispense free bags for dog waste, are the latest in an initiative which is helping to keep local communities clean.

They follow 17 other dog waste bag stations which have been installed in areas across Bridgend County Borough where they are proving to be highly effective in encouraging owners to ‘bag it and bin it’.

Dog fouling is one of the most commonly-raised issues that the council has to deal with, and we’ve seen a huge improvement in areas where the stations have been installed with more dog owners bagging and binning their pet’s waste.

With 20 stations now installed across the county borough, they are proving to be successful in areas such as Porthcawl, Coychurch, Tondu, Heol Y Cyw, Ogmore Vale, Pyle, Kenfig Hill, Brackla, Maesteg, Coytrahen, Ynysawdre, Blaengarw, Coity and Pencoed.

We consulted with town and community councils over the plans to ensure that the stations could be installed at locations where they felt there were particular problems. The majority of dog owners are already responsible when it comes to picking up after their pets, and there is really no excuse for not doing so. Dog waste bags can be thrown into any public bin, not just the ones that are specifically for dog waste, but if you cannot find a public bin, please take the bag home with you and bin it there.

Councillor Richard Young, Cabinet Member for Communities

Cheryl John, Clerk for Maesteg Town Council, said: “The stretch of A4063 between Llangynwyd and Cwmfelin is very popular with dog walkers, and as a result of discussions between the community council and Bridgend County Borough Council, two stations have been installed, one outside Llangynwyd Village Hall and another near Cwmfelin Primary School.

“The residents of the rural villages of Llangynwyd and Cwmfelin will be so pleased to see their lovely streets kept clean and tidy.”
