Funding and training for local athletes made available

Local athletes can follow in the footsteps of their Olympic and Paralympic heroes this month as the Halo Sport Foundation opens up for applications.

The Foundation gives ambitious sportsmen, women and children in Bridgend County Borough crucial support for their future including the offer of free memberships at Halo’s sport and leisure facilities.

Those supported by the scheme in the past include Paralympic Gold-medallist Aled Davies OBE and former world champion triathlete Helen Jenkins.

Simon Gwynne, Halo Partnership Manager, said: “As a not-for-profit organisation and registered charity whose primary aim is to provide the local community with active leisure facilities, we are delighted to be able to offer support through the Sport Foundation for another year.

“We see it as an opportunity to put something back into the community that has supported us so well.”

The Foundation has previously supported 146 local sports people across a variety of sports including triathlon, deaf rugby, taekwondo, athletics, surfing and tennis.

They have access to Halo Leisure gyms, group exercise classes, pools, racket sports courts, and indoor and outdoor sports pitches to keep fit and prepare for competitive events.

Many of the county’s most talented sports people struggle to meet the rising costs of competition.

The Halo Sport Foundation is a brilliant opportunity for budding sportsmen and women to get vital support to help them thrive and give them the best chance to succeed in their chosen sport.

Those applying now will be following in the footsteps of some of the County Borough’s most decorated individuals in sport.

Councillor Dhanisha Patel, Cabinet Member for Wellbeing and Future Generations

Rising sports stars have until 20 February 2022 to apply for a share of the Sport Foundation support. Application forms and more information can be found on Halo Sport Foundation website.
