Funding support is a recipe for success at new delicatessen

A Bridgend-based shortbread company which has received start-up support through the council’s Kick-start fund has been crowned winner in the ‘Welsh produce of the year’ category at the Food Awards Wales 2019.  

Shelly’s Deli fought off fierce competition at the national awards held in Cardiff City Stadium earlier this month, securing the title for Bridgend County Borough. The awards recognised and celebrated the achievements of local suppliers, wholesalers, chefs and establishments who serve the community with fresh products and deliver great experiences to their diners.

The deli was set up in June 2018 with the help of a Kick Start grant provided jointly by Bridgend County Borough Council and UK Steel Enterprise and has since gone from strength to strength, selling their own range of speciality biscuits, shortbreads and Welsh cakes.

Michelle Davies, owner of Shelly’s Deli, said: “The Kick Start grant has been excellent and it would have been difficult to get to this point without it. Not only have we won a fantastic award at the Food Awards Wales 2019, we are now also supplying cakes, pastries and other delights to St Fagan’s National Museum of History, The National Botanical Gardens, and many other tourist outlets and shops across Wales.”

We are thrilled to hear that Shelly’s Deli are doing so well in Bridgend County Borough and beyond.
